چکیده

We show that a survey of equations of state and observations of X–ray pulsations from SAX J1808.4– 3658 give 2.27 M⊙ as the upper limit of the compact star mass. The corresponding upper limit of the radius comes out to be 9.73 km. We also do a probabilistic study to estimate the lower limit of the mass of the compact star. Such a limit puts useful constraints on equations of state. We also discuss the implications of the upper mass limit for the the evolutionary history of the source, as well as the detection of it in radio frequencies. We envisage that the possible observation of radio–eclipse may be able to rule out several soft equation of state models, by setting a moderately high value for the lower limit of inclination angle. Subject headings: accretion, accretion disks — binaries: close — equation of state — pulsars: individual (SAX J1808.4–3658) — X-rays: stars

Millisecond X–Ray Pulsar SAX J1808.4–3658: Limits to the Mass and the Radius of the Compact Star

We predict from a survey of equations of state and observations of X–ray pulsations from SAX J1808.4–3658, that the upper limit of the mass of the compact star is 2.27 M⊙ . The corresponding upper limit of the radius comes out to be 9.73 km. We also do a study to estimate the lower limit of the mass of the compact star. Such a limit is very useful to put constraints on equations of state. We al...

Limits on Mass and Radius for the Ms-period X-ray Pulsar Sax J1808.4-3658

SAX J1808.4-3658 has a 2.5 millisecond neutron star rotation period and exhibits X-ray pulsations due to its rotating hot spot. Here we present an analysis of the pulse shapes of SAX J1808.4-3658 during its 1998 outburst. The modeling of the pulse shape includes several effects, including gravitational light-bending, doppler effects and two spectral components with different emissivity. In addi...

Interior matter estimates of the X-ray pulsar in SAX J1808.4-3658 from mass-radius and rotation measurements

Aims. To constrain the equation of state of super-nuclear density matter and probe the interior composition of the X-ray pulsar in SAX J1808.4-3658. In our estimation, we consider both its persistent 2.49 ms X-ray pulsations discovered by Wijnands and van der Klis from using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, which is interpreted to come from an accreting-powered millisecond X-ray pulsar in the l...

A Brown Dwarf Companion for the Accreting Millisecond Pulsar Sax J1808.4−3658 Lars Bildsten

The BeppoSAX Wide Field Cameras have revealed a population of faint neutron star X-ray transients in the Galactic bulge. King conjectured that these neutron stars are accreting from brown dwarfs with a time-averaged mass transfer rate 〈Ṁ〉 ≈ 10M⊙ yr−1 that is low enough for accretion disk instabilities. We show that the measured orbital parameters of the 401 Hz accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J...

Model-independent Mass-Radius Constraint for Neutron Stars

While model-independent limits are always interesting, a limit on neutron star radius as a function of mass attains special interest in light of recent interpretations of the periodic as well as quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in brightness of X-rays emitted from neutron stars that are accreting matter from a low-mass companion. Here we derive such a limit based only on well accepted princip...
